Erdinger is the biggest wheat beer brewery in the world, and it brews nothing else. If you have seen a tall, cloudy glass of German beer at an Australian pub or a fun-run finish line, there is a good chance it was Erdinger.
The story of Erdinger
The brewery was founded in 1886 by Johann Kienle in Erding, a market town north-east of Munich. Franz Brombach bought it in 1935 and renamed it Erdinger Weißbräu in 1949. His son Werner Brombach turned a regional brewery into an international brand, and it is still owned by the Brombach family today.
Unlike many big German brands, Erdinger has stayed independent and brews all of its beer in Erding. Its wheat beer is bottle-conditioned: a little yeast and fresh wort are added at bottling, so the beer keeps fermenting in the bottle for a finer, livelier fizz.
Erdinger beers to try
- Erdinger Weissbier (5.3%): The classic. Golden, cloudy and smooth, with banana, clove and a light citrus finish.
- Erdinger Dunkel (5.3%): A dark wheat beer with roasted malt, cocoa and caramel alongside the usual wheat beer fruitiness.
- Erdinger Pikantus (7.3%): A dark wheat bock, rich and warming. Good with dessert.
- Erdinger Alkoholfrei (under 0.5%): One of the most popular alcohol-free beers in Australia, sold as an isotonic drink for after exercise. More options are in our alcohol-free German beers guide.
What does Erdinger taste like?
Erdinger Weissbier is a touch lighter and less sweet than some Bavarian wheat beers, which makes it a good first wheat beer. Serve it cold, but not icy, in a tall wheat beer glass to show off the head. Locals sometimes add a lemon slice. Purists in Bavaria don’t.
Food pairing: Barbecued chicken, fish tacos, Thai salads and soft cheeses. The Dunkel suits roast pork and sausages, and Pikantus pairs well with chocolate pudding.
Where to buy Erdinger in Australia
Erdinger is one of the most widely stocked German beers in the country:
- Dan Murphy’s, BWS, Liquorland and First Choice Liquor carry the Weissbier and Alkoholfrei in bottles and multipacks
- Supermarket-attached bottle shops often stock the alcohol-free version
- Specialist bottle shops are the best bet for the Dunkel and Pikantus
