Ayinger is a family brewery in the village of Aying, south-east of Munich. It is small by Bavarian standards but has a big reputation among beer lovers, mostly thanks to its Celebrator Doppelbock.

The story of Ayinger

Johann Liebhard founded the brewery in 1878 to supply his inn in Aying. It is still family-owned, now by the Inselkammer family, descendants of the founder. The brewery and its inn, Brauereigasthof Aying, are at the heart of village life, and the brewery moved to a modern site on the edge of Aying in 1999.

Ayinger exports more than most breweries of its size, and its beers regularly win international awards. Celebrator in particular is often rated one of the best doppelbocks in the world.

Ayinger beers to try

What does Ayinger taste like?

Celebrator is rich but not heavy, with flavours of toffee, dried plums and chocolate and a surprisingly clean finish. Bräuweisse is lively and fruity, and the Jahrhundert is soft and malty, with a little more body than a Helles.

Food pairing: Celebrator with roast pork, braised beef cheeks, aged cheese and chocolate desserts. Bräuweisse with seafood and summer salads.

Ayinger FAQs

Where can I buy Ayinger beer in Australia?

Ayinger is mostly sold at specialist and craft beer bottle shops in Australia. Celebrator and Bräuweisse are the easiest to find, and larger Dan Murphy’s stores sometimes carry them.

Why is there a goat on Ayinger Celebrator?

Each bottle of Celebrator comes with a small plastic goat hanging from its neck. The goat is a play on the German word “Bock”, which means billy goat and also names the strong beer style.

How strong is Ayinger Celebrator?

Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock is 6.7% ABV. The Bräuweisse wheat beer is 5.1% and the Jahrhundert Bier 5.5%.

Is Ayinger an Oktoberfest brewery?

No. Only breweries within Munich’s city limits can serve at the Munich Oktoberfest. Aying is about 25 km south-east of Munich, so Ayinger is not served there, although it brews an Oktober Fest-Märzen.
