Krombacher has for years been Germany’s best-selling beer brand. Its pilsner, brewed with soft spring water from the hills of Siegerland, is the beer many Germans grew up with, and it is increasingly easy to find in Australia.
The story of Krombacher
In 1803 Johannes Haas founded the brewery in the family inn in Krombach, a village in the Siegerland region of western Germany. The brewery has stayed in private hands ever since and is now owned by the Schadeberg family.
Krombacher grew into one of Germany’s biggest breweries in the second half of the 20th century, helped by memorable TV ads featuring its island-and-lake landscape. In 2002 it ran a well-known campaign with WWF to protect rainforest in Central Africa, with every crate sold helping to fund it.
Krombacher beers to try
- Krombacher Pils (4.8%): The flagship. Pale, clear, fresh and balanced with a gentle bitterness.
- Krombacher Weizen (5.3%): A light, fruity wheat beer.
- Krombacher Radler: Pils mixed with lemonade. Very refreshing on a hot Australian day.
- Krombacher 0.0%: The alcohol-free pilsner. See our alcohol-free German beers.
What does Krombacher taste like?
Krombacher Pils is softer and less bitter than many northern pilsners, thanks to its very soft brewing water. It has a light grainy malt character, a floral hop aroma and a clean, dry finish, which makes it easy to drink in hot weather.
Food pairing: Barbecued sausages, burgers, pizza, schnitzel and fried chicken.
Where to buy Krombacher in Australia
- Dan Murphy’s and First Choice Liquor often stock Krombacher Pils in bottles and cans
- Independent bottle shops with a strong imported range are your best bet for the Weizen and Radler
