Hacker-Pschorr is one of Munich’s six Oktoberfest breweries and one of its oldest. It is less famous than its sister brand Paulaner, but many beer lovers think it brews some of the city’s best traditional beers.
The story of Hacker-Pschorr
The Hacker brewery was first recorded in Munich in 1417. In 1793 brewer Joseph Pschorr married Maria Theresia Hacker and took over her family’s brewery. He later founded a second brewery under his own name, and for most of the next two centuries Hacker and Pschorr were separate breweries run by related families.
The two merged in 1972 to form Hacker-Pschorr. Today the brand belongs to the Paulaner Brauerei Gruppe and is brewed in Munich, with a range that leans towards traditional Bavarian styles.
Hacker-Pschorr beers to try
- Münchner Gold (5.5%): A full-bodied golden lager with honeyed malt. The brewery’s signature beer.
- Münchner Hell (5.0%): A crisp, everyday Munich Helles.
- Hefe Weisse (5.5%): A rich, fruity Bavarian wheat beer.
- Münchner Kellerbier (5.5%): Unfiltered, amber and malty, like a beer straight from the cellar.
- Oktoberfest Märzen (5.8%): Amber, toasty and smooth.
- Animator (about 8.1%): A dark, strong doppelbock.
What does Hacker-Pschorr taste like?
Hacker-Pschorr beers tend to be fuller and maltier than other Munich brands. The Münchner Gold is round and slightly sweet, the Kellerbier is bready and earthy, and the Märzen has toasted caramel notes.
Food pairing: Münchner Gold with roast pork and crackling. Kellerbier with a cheese and charcuterie board. Märzen with bratwurst, roast chicken and sauerkraut.
