Radeberger is a classic pilsner from Saxony, in eastern Germany. It was one of the first German breweries to brew only pilsner and was once the official beer of the Saxon royal court.
The story of Radeberger
The brewery was founded in 1872 as “Zum Bergkeller” in Radeberg, near Dresden. From the start it brewed in the new pilsner style, made popular in Bohemia only a few decades earlier, rather than the darker beers common in Germany at the time.
In 1905 Radeberger became supplier to the court of King Frederick Augustus III of Saxony. During the communist era it was one of the few East German beers exported to the West. After reunification it became part of what is now the Radeberger Group, Germany’s largest brewing group, which also brews Jever and Schöfferhofer.
Radeberger beers to try
- Radeberger Pilsner (4.8%): The one and only. Bright gold, crisp and refreshing with a firm hop bitterness.
What does Radeberger taste like?
Radeberger Pilsner is clean and elegant, with a light grainy malt base, a floral and herbal hop aroma and a dry, bitter finish. It sits between the softness of Warsteiner and the sharp bitterness of Jever. Pour it into a tall pilsner glass to keep the head.
Food pairing: Oysters, grilled white fish, crumbed prawns, potato salad and Thüringer sausages.
