Schneider Weisse brews nothing but wheat beer and has done so since 1872. Its dark, amber Unser Original and the mighty Aventinus are favourites with Australian craft beer fans.
The story of Schneider Weisse
For centuries wheat beer in Bavaria was a royal monopoly. In 1872 Georg Schneider I bought the right to brew it from King Ludwig II and started brewing in Munich’s Weisses Bräuhaus. He kept wheat beer alive at a time when most drinkers were switching to lager.
The family bought a brewery in Kelheim, on the Danube, in 1928, and moved all brewing there after the Munich brewery was destroyed in the Second World War. The Weisses Bräuhaus in Munich is still a famous Schneider beer hall. The brewery is run by the Schneider family to this day.
Schneider Weisse beers to try
- TAP7 Unser Original (5.4%): An amber wheat beer with banana, clove and a light caramel note. The original recipe from 1872.
- TAP6 Aventinus (8.2%): A dark wheat doppelbock with plum, raisin and spice. First brewed in 1907.
- TAP5 Meine Hopfenweisse (8.2%): A strong, hoppy wheat bock, first brewed with American craft brewers.
- Aventinus Eisbock (12%): A concentrated, warming sipping beer.
What does Schneider Weisse taste like?
Unser Original is darker and more complex than most Hefeweizens, with caramel and toasted bread under the usual banana and clove. Aventinus is rich and fruity, almost like a Christmas pudding in a glass. Serve them a little warmer than lager, in a tall wheat beer glass.
Food pairing: Unser Original with roast pork, Weisswurst and pretzels. Aventinus with game, blue cheese and Christmas pudding.
